The lake is not a backdrop, it is the organizing principle around which community life in Chaparral revolves. It took 200 million gallons of water to fill the lake, taking 49 days to complete. The result is a stunning 32-acre private water feature that gives residents year-round recreation opportunities that most Calgary communities can only approximate.
The amenities include a beautifully landscaped park with cascading waterfalls, a recreational building with social room and kitchen, sandy beach, fishing, boating, a toboggan run, children's playground areas, a winter skating rink, picnic areas and a cook shelter, tennis, basketball, and beach volleyball courts, and a walking path. The lake and park are open 365 days a year. In summer, the beach draws families for swimming and paddling. In winter, the community lake features ice fishing areas, a skating path, and ice rinks, transforming the same space into a completely different seasonal experience. There is even an underwater scuba diving course within the lake, making Chaparral genuinely one of the most feature-rich private lake communities in the entire city.
The Lake Chaparral Residents Association governs the lake and its facilities, with annual membership dues covering day-to-day operations, maintenance of community entrance features, and long-term capital planning for the lake and all its assets. The CRA also organizes community events including the beloved Stampede Kick-off Breakfast and Winterlude celebrations, giving residents the kind of year-round social calendar that builds lasting community bonds.
