Fish Creek Provincial Park

Three Sides of Natural Beauty

Parkland is bordered to the north by Canyon Meadows Drive, to the east by Bow Bottom Trail, and to the south and west by Fish Creek Provincial Park. That's not just proximity to a park, it's a neighbourhood that is, on two full sides, wrapped by one of Canada's largest urban nature preserves. There is a 20-metre-wide strip of open space maintained along the top of Fish Creek Park for public access, and Parkland offers panoramic views of ancient trees, meadows and the river.

For residents, this means the trails, wetlands, forests, and riverside pathways of Fish Creek are accessible on foot from virtually every street in the neighbourhood. Whether it's an early morning run along the bluffs, a weekend bike ride with the kids, or an evening walk with the dog as the sun sets over the valley, Fish Creek is simply part of daily life in Parkland in a way that few other Calgary communities can claim. Parkland residents are actively engaged in preserving the park and its wildlife, participating in the annual river cleanup and working closely with the Friends of Fish Creek Park.  The sense of environmental stewardship here is genuine and community-wide.

And in summer, the beach at Sikome Lake within Fish Creek Park welcomes everyone wanting to enjoy sunbathing and swimming, one of those distinctly Calgary experiences that residents of most other communities have to drive considerably further to access.

Park 96

A Private Backyard Like No Other

One of Parkland's most distinctive and beloved features is something you won't find in any other Calgary community: Park 96. Keith Construction signed over the property rights of Lot 96 on October 22, 1974 to the residents, and the Parkland Community Centre (Calgary) Ltd. was born, affectionately known ever since as Park 96. Park 96 is a parcel of land that was set aside and sold to the residents of Parkland by developer Keith Homes in 1975 to create a private gated recreational area exclusively for the residents of Parkland.

Park 96 is a 22-acre private park equipped with amenities including tennis courts, a disc golf course, skating rinks, playgrounds, and a splash park, all exclusively for Parkland residents. Annual events at Park 96 include Summerfest, Movie in the Park, Summer Sunday Music, and skating events, with hall and cookhouse facilities available for rental exclusively to Parkland residents. For families with children, the splash park and skating rink alone are worth the annual membership fee. For adults, the disc golf course, tennis courts, and community social events make it a genuine gathering place rather than just a recreational facility.

This combination, Fish Creek on one side, a private 22-acre community park on the other, gives Parkland a lifestyle offering that is genuinely unique in Calgary.

Homes

Space, Character & Long-Term Value

The community predominantly features single-family homes on spacious lots, many of which have been updated to include modern amenities while retaining their classic charm. The majority of homes were built in the 1970s and carry the hallmarks of that era, larger lot sizes, mature landscaping, finished basements, and generous room proportions that newer homes often sacrifice in favour of open-plan layouts. Many have been substantially renovated over the years, offering modern kitchens, updated bathrooms, and contemporary finishes while maintaining the solid construction and spacious feel that makes 1970s homes so enduringly popular.

At the upper end, homes backing onto Fish Creek Park sit on the escarpment with stunning views over the valley, properties that rarely come to market and command strong prices when they do. For buyers seeking a detached home with a real yard, mature trees, and a neighbourhood that feels unhurried and settled, Parkland delivers in a way that few communities at any price point can match.

Schools & Education

Parkland's educational options include Prince Of Wales School (K-6) serving the public system, and St. Philip Elementary School serving the Catholic system both located within or immediately adjacent to the community.

Public  Junior High: Wilma Hansen School (7-9) and Catholic: St. Bonaventure (7-9)

Lord Beaverbrook High School serves Parkland's public high school students, with additional Catholic secondary options accessible nearby with Our Lady of the Rockies as the designated.

The community's relatively small size means schools here maintain a genuine neighbourhood feel, with many children walking to class along the tree-lined streets.

Shopping, Healthcare & Getting Around

The closest shops are at Deer Valley Shopping Centre (everything from groceries, coffee to fitness), with quick access to a wider range of shops and restaurants via Macleod Trail and Deerfoot Trail. Southcentre Mall, one of Calgary's premier shopping destinations, is a short drive to the north, and the growing retail corridor along the south Macleod Trail corridor adds convenience for everyday errands.

A summer walk or bike ride down the hill to Annie's cafe for an ice-cream cone has been a favorite family tradition for years!

Rockyview General Hospital, one of Calgary's major healthcare facilities, is located within a short drive, offering comprehensive medical services including emergency care and specialized treatments.

For commuters, Parkland is exceptionally well-connected. There are five C-Train stations within three kilometers of Parkland, and several bus routes run through the community. For drivers, downtown Calgary can be accessed via Bow Bottom Trail to Deerfoot, Canyon Meadows Drive, and Macleod Trail, multiple options that provide flexibility during peak commute hours.

A Community Worth the Search

Parkland doesn't have the name recognition of some newer SE Calgary communities, and that's partly why it remains so appealing to buyers who discover it. Inventory is limited, this is a small, fully built-out neighbourhood where well-priced homes generate genuine competition when they come to market. The community boasts a range of multicultural events, an active community garden, a robust soccer program, and a strong community newsletter keeping residents informed and engaged year-round. The community association manages a hockey rink with boards, lighting, and a Zamboni, a detail that speaks volumes about the level of care residents invest in their neighbourhood.

If you're drawn to SE Calgary and you haven't yet looked seriously at Parkland, it's worth your time. The trees, the park, the views, the private amenities, the quiet streets, and the long-term value make it one of the most rewarding places to own a home in the southeast.
